I made a list of my favorite movies.

I'm not sure it's done. I'm not sure it's accurate. I'm pretty sure.

Someone say something about it.

I've got . . . something to do.

Good list, although I don't know any of the Japanese movies 'cept for Rashoman. Maybe my father and I will rent a couple of those tomorrow night.

Jackie Brown < Resevoir Dogs < Pulp Fiction

Seven Samurai is a good Japanese movie to watch.

I don't like how this damned list . . . only puts the foreign names of the foreign films. I mean, come on. It's an English website.

Having things like 'SHICHININ NO SAMURAI' on there makes me look like some kind of hardcore asshole.

I did, however, learn that True Lies' French title is "Le Cameleon." That ain't bad.

And, no:

Jackie Brown > Pulp Fiction > Reservoir Dogs.

You just don't get it.

You will, someday.

Hmm, I wish I could have put Out of Sight on the list.

Damn.

Jackie Brown was awesome. Just out of curiosity, why Lupin before Seven Samurai?

Jackie Brown doesn't have anything near as good as the Ear scene or the Christopher Walken monologue.

Oh, so you're a big fan of small moments that shock either with violence and/or profane hiccups and/or dream sequences?

I see.

I'm a fan of moments. I think moments make a movie.

The best movies have the best moments.

In addition to overall ass-kicking ness.

If you remove the movies I've not seen (which... are mostly the Japanese ones), that's mostly... something I might hypothetically pull together. More or less.

Maybe you should see some more Japanese/Chinese movies, then.

I regret the absence of Hitchcock, just a little bit.

I wasn't going to be a loser and put Citizen Kane into the top five just because. I mean . . . these are my favorite movies.

Okay. Let's go into a more in-depth breakdown.

When I mentioned how familiar the list appears to me, what I meant to say was: this is close in spirit to what I might have put together. The actual selections will, however, differ.

Hold on. Where did this come from?

It's hardly ideal; I know it could use a bunch more thought. Still, it's not a bad start.

Back to the subject, however!

My Fair Lady, if I were to cite a musical, would almost certainly be my first choice. By George! It's one of the only MGM-flavour musicals I can tolerate, and it goes several steps beyond -- into real-actual enjoyment territory!

Whisper of the Heart, most yes. I'll really have to go with Nausicaa, however, as my favourite overall Miyazaki/Ghibli Item. But we've gone into all of this.

Porco Rosso -- mih. Better choice than Spirited Away, certainly. The fight at the end seems largely unnecessary and drawn-out, to me; added because... some kind of climax was required.

Raiders, Strangelove, and Bladerunner might be on my own list, as-is. Depending on my mood.

I don't give a damn about Star Wars, and I doubt I ever will!

Again, however, I believe we've established this.

And. Yes.

Much as I'd like to see your list, I cannot. The screen halfway comes up, I see the top bar announce it as "eric-jon waugh's list", and then I get a weird kind of error page.

Same for my list.

Hmm. Has the internet totally died since my posting of my list?

!?!?!?

That's too bad the list made you look like a harcore asshole. I'd rock the list hard but I'm not sure I can pick 20 movies to represent my movie(man)hood.

Seven Samurai is one of my favorite movies, and your inclusion of Rushmore at number three makes me happy. I agree with the person above who puts Pulp Fiction above Jackie Brown--I personally think it's better in every way (And you get ultra bonus points for not trying to be some Tarantino snob that says Reservoir Dogs was his best film, that shit wrecks me).

But when you commented that you wish you could of got 'Out of Sight' on the list I knew your list was good, even without seeing most of those Japanese flicks. 'Out of Sight' just plain kicks ass. I was a little mad at the existence of 'Ocean's 11' after Soderbergh had already rocked us so hard (and he defined cool while doing it) with Out of Sight. Bonus points to Steven for making J. Lo watchable.

I'd personally have a few more Spielberg films (you know he touched you!! You know it!!!) on my list, but--to state the obvious--it's your list.

Also...

True Lies? Defend yourself!

one has no need to defend one's self about giving true lies status as a good movie. it was great. but if tim wants to ill let him defend it.

Eh, it was a half-joke. I just have a big chip on my shoulder about Jamie Lee Curtis' existence. At the risk of being castrated I'm going to say that Tom Arnold made the film.

True Lies is teh genius. I'd call it the best action film of all time.

Digging deeper, I'd say that it's what inspired me to start writing.

From childhood, I liked action-adventure, and I liked some drama, too. Was I the only one who wanted to see them postmodernly combined?

Hmmm.

I could write a whole lot more on this.

Oh! OH!

I ALREADY DID!

The question is . . . where?

My first college roommate was an extra in Election. He recently called me up, and was raving about the new dvd of About Schmidt. I thought both movies were passable, at best.

Somehow my mind equated Rushmore with Election, and Election with Schmidt. I think my synapses aren't firing with precision this morning.

Well Election and Schmidt were both written and directed by Alexander Payne, and Election and Rushmore are both sort of oddball dark comedies, so don't feel so bad! There's connections man.

I liked Election a lot, not my first time there though. The second, which was years later, hit me nicely.

Schmidt was a much subtler movie. No new themes or bust-out comedy, but Jack Nicholson was good, no?

My roommate had to fawn over anything from Nebraska. Hometown, you see. They filmed Election in his high school, which also happened to be the director's school, so that's where the extra job came from.

There was a sports bar we would go to that illegally tapped into the "Huskervision" jumbotron feed from the stadium whenever they had a game. The devotion of some of the fans was downright scary, with facepaint and uniforms complete with pads. I guess if you live in Omaha you need something to add meaning to your life.

I'll add Election to my netflix queue. So, sometime in the next two years, I'll get around to watching it.

Jack was good in Schmidt, granted. It was well written, and well acted. I just wasn't in the mood for a horribly depressing movie at the time. Seeing someone's life go to shit in such a realistic way was horrifying. That, and Kathy Bates' breasts.

I know what you're saying. My dad used to live in Omaha, NE. When I would visit him at xmas the huskers would inevitably be in some huge bowl game and win it.

I remember after one such victory there were reports that local college kids broke into the zoo and started punching horses.

As a horse I'd rather get punched by rowdy frat boys then see Kathy Bates' breasts.

That scene was just inappropriate.

Yeah, it was a little sick.

And by "a little," I mean "a lot."

It was a lot sick.

Maybe worse than . . .

. . . well, I won't get into it here.

Hell.

Punching horses.

Hell.

Yes.

You know, inappropriate paragraph breaks work when you're half ass drunk.

Or if you're Tim Rogers.

Which I'm not.

But I am half ass drunk.

Which just makes me wish I was Tim Rogers.

So I could make inopportune

Stops

In my comments

In my own livejournal.

Of course, I don't even own my own LiveJournal.
Which makes any sudden stops just look... sudden.

Yeah.

So, I just watched 25th Hour.

Then, shit got weird. There was a fistfight, although I don't really know who it was between, although I know my endtable is in tatters.

Long night. I thought I was over all that highschool/college/graduate bullshit. Guess not.

It really doesn't matter, since none of you devoted TR fans know who I am. That's what I get for lurking for a year.

Filthy

Heh, I just found insertcredit today and read several of your articles and find them to be fascinating and entertaining. I found your LJ through one of them and after browsing it a bit, figured I'd like to read more. Hope you don't mind, but I've added you to my friends list. I don't expect that you'll do the same, but I figured I ought to atleast let you know.
